In Microsoft Windows 7, error 720 may occur while establishing a VPN connection to Windows RAS. This behavior may occur in the following cases:
1. Uncommon Protocol between your Computer and RAS server
2. The Registry Entries Related to Network Settings are Corrupted
3. A Protocol is Required
4. Reinstall the TCP/ IP Protocol
Uncommon Protocol between your Computer and RAS Server
To resolve Windows 7 error 720, do below steps:
1. Click Start | Control Panel.
2. Click Network and Internet | Network and Sharing Centre.
3. Click your active connection, for example, Local Area Connection 1.
4. Click Properties button in the new dialog.
5. From the Networking tab, make sure that you have the protocol that the RAS server is running.
6. Click OK | OK | Close.
The Registry Entries Related to Network Settings are Corrupted
The network related settings are stored in your Registry and accessed at the time you establish a VPN connection. Windows 7 error 720 occurs due to obsolete, corrupted and incorrect registry entries.
Repair the registry by following the below steps:
1. Download, install and run a Registry Cleaner and PC Optimizer.
2. Click Registry Cleaner | Start Scan.
3. Follow the simple wizard.
A Protocol is Required
If you do not have the protocol that the RAS server is running, Windows 7 error 720 may occur. Add the required protocol as mentioned below:
1. Click Start | Control Panel.
2. Click Network and Internet | Network and Sharing Centre.
3. Click your active connection, for example, Local Area Connection 1.
4. Click Properties button in the new dialog.
5. Click Networking tab.
6. Click Install button.
7. Select Protocol option.
8. Click Add button.
9. Select the protocol that you need to install right now.
10. Click OK | OK | Close.
Reinstall the TCP/ IP Protocol
To resolve Windows 7 error 720, we will mainly do the following changes:
a. Uninstall the TCP/ IP protocol
b. Remove the second Wide Area Network (WAN) Miniport IP device
c. Reinstall the TCP/ IP protocol.
The actual steps are as follows:
A. UNINSTALL THE TCP/ IP PROTOCOL
1. Click Start | Control Panel.
2. Click Network and Internet | Network and Sharing Centre.
3. Click your active connection, for example, Local Area Connection 1.
4. Click Properties button in the new dialog.
5. Click Networking tab.
6. Select your Internet Protocol (TCP/ IP).
7. Uninstall button.
8. Follow the on screen instructions to uninstall it completely.
9. If you receive a prompt for allowing Windows to enable a protocol, click No button.
10. Restart the system when prompted.
B. REMOVE THE SECOND WIDE AREA NETWORK (WAN) MINIPORT IP DEVICE
11. Right click My Computer.
12. Select Properties option.
13. Click Advanced System Settings at the left hand side.
14. Click Hardware tab in the new dialog that appears.
15. Click Device Manager button.
16. Click View | Show Hidden Devices.
17. Expand the following:
| Network Adapters
18. If you see any WAN Miniport IP Device, continue these instructions. Otherwise, jump to the Step 26.
19. Press Windows Key + R to initialize Registry Editor.
20. Type RegEdit and press ENTER.
21. Navigate the following registry hive:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlClass{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
22. Click each of the registry sub keys under this key, and then view the Data column of the DriverDesc value to determine which of the sub keys corresponds to WAN Miniport (IP). For example, the 0005 sub key.
23. Right-click the subkey whose DriverDesc value data is WAN Miniport (IP) (for example, right-click 0005), and then click Delete.
24. Click Yes to confirm that you want to delete the key.
25. Close Registry Editor.
26. Repeat the above Steps 11 to 17.
27. Right click the device named WAN Miniport (IP) and select Uninstall option.
28. Confirm your changes.
C. REINSTALL THE TCP/ IP PROTOCOL
29. Repeat the above Steps 1 to 5.
30. Click Install button.
31. Select Protocol option.
32. Click Add button.
33. Select the protocol that you need to install right now.
34. Click OK | OK | Close.
